California schools are preparing for a stretch of austerity that could endanger students’ already uncertain recovery from the pandemic. An end to billions of dollars in federal COVID-19 relief funds, in addition to declining enrollment, staff raises, hiring binges, and stagnant state funding will create budget shortfalls that will affect low-income districts the most.
