As Los Angeles moved one step closer to a teacher strike, LA Unified this week released a Family Resource Guide to help parents prepare for the possibility of a teacher walkout. The guide addresses questions parents have raised about what will happen at the schools and how to talk with their children about it. It also outlines how the contract negotiations with the teacher’s union reached this point, and it includes contact information for schools and other LA Unified offices.

The district and its teachers’ union have been locked in fractious negotiations after teachers affiliated with the LAUSD overwhelmingly voted to call for a strike if no resolution is found. A third try at finding a resolution under the gaze of a state-appointed mediator failed last week. A variety of contract issues are on the table, including reduction in class sizes and accountability for charter schools, but salary remains one of the top issues.
